I found tabi-like socks at a 100 yen shop. Tabi are traditional Japanese socks that separate the big toe from the rest of the toes. I bought them because even common socks are rarely sold at such a reasonable price at other shops.
As well as the shape, the design on the socks is unique. A kabuki actor is designed in front, though the back design is quite simple. Obviously, the design in front is inspired by the famous Japanese ukiyo-e print designer, Sharaku. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art that flourished in the Edo Period (1603-1868), and one of the common subjects is a kabuki actor like this.
I was not sure if the classical Japanese design goes well with my clothing. I had never worn Sharaku design. Anyway, I decided to try them on. Maybe black is the best color because the ends of the socks are black.
Now look at the picture. Well, it is not too bad. I think it is cool, but too individualistic. I won’t wear them to go shopping.
Then, how about jeans? I want to wear these socks in my daily life, so a casual style may be good.
Look at the next picture. What do you think? I like it. To my surprise, the socks and jeans go together. I can wear them anywhere -a supermarket, park, station and even my friend’s house.
I bought 25-27 cm socks and my husband sometimes wear them, too. I think there are some other sizes at the shops, as well. They would be perfect as fun gifts for friends and family. I will often wear them at home and outside, and when they are worn out, I’ll throw them away while traveling away to reduce my belongings.
